Map collections and resources: Using Maps & Making Maps
This library guide will introduce you to Stanford Libraries map collections, services, and related resources.
Map, Cartographic & Spatial Resources at Stanford Libraries
- Need help using maps?Stanford's map collections include a large number of historical and contemporary maps, globes, and atlases. The majority of circulating maps are available at the Branner Earth Sciences Library or can be requested from off-site storage. A unique collection of historic maps and other cartographic objects can be viewed by request in the David Rumsey Map Center reading room, the premiere historical cartographic collection on the West Coast. High resolution digital copies of many maps are accessible through SearchWorks.
- Need help making maps? The Stanford Geospatial Center (SGC) provides GIS support and services to all Stanford students, staff, and faculty. Our primary mission is to facilitate the effective use of GIS technology and data across campus. We provide essential GIS training, one-on-one GIS consultations, GIS project and analysis support, GIS data services, and map design and production support.
Finding maps
- Library Catalog Map SearchTry resource type = maps on SearchWorks will help you find paper maps (scanned and not), digitized maps not physically located at Stanford, atlases, and born-digital geospatial datsets.
- EarthWorks Spatial SearchA discovery tool for geospatial (GIS) data. Search and browse the GIS collections of Stanford Libraries, as well as many other institutions. Data can be searched spatially, by manipulating a map; by keyword search; by selecting search limiting facets (e.g., limit to a given format type); or by combining these options.
