Terminology to refer to people of Latin American ancestry in the United States has evolved over time. Chicano came out of the struggle for civil rights and referred to people of Mexican American ancestry, especially in the American Southwest. Hispanic became a category used for the 1980 Census, while still in use, it’s becoming more common to hear Latinx. Chicana/o was later adopted to be more inclusive. Chicana/o-Latina/o is the official Stanford program name and this guide mirrors that term.
