This guide is limited to Japanese e-resources.  While not comprehensive, it offers tools and directions for conducting research across various academic disciplines within Japanese Studies.

Japanese Romanization and Search Tips

When looking for materials with Japanese terms, it may be beneficial to conduct searches using both Japanese characters and Japanese romanization.  One benefit of romanization is the ability to locate records with variant character forms, such as older Chinese characters (kyūjitai 旧字体).

The Library of Congress (LC) uses a modified Hepburn system for cataloging materials in Japanese, which means that most libraries in North America use this system too.  For guidelines on romanization standards, please refer to the LC Japanese Romanization Guide:
