This guide offers an introduction to researching Stanford history using University Archives collection materials and includes instructions for identifying, accessing and working with Special Collections materials.

Before you visit

The Department of Special Collections & University Archivers is open to all Stanford and non-Stanford researchers. To learn how to request materials in advance of your visit, please review the Guide to Using Special Collections & University Archives. You may also with to review our reading room policies before you visit. If you are not able to travel to campus to view materials, you may wish to consult our duplication policies. The Field Reading Room hours are Monday - Friday, 9 AM - 5 PM.

If you have additional questions about your visit, please write to specialcollections@stanford.edu

Request materials in advance

All of our materials are located in remote facilities, so patrons must request materials two full business days before planned date of use. In some cases, paging may take up to a week. All of our materials can be paged online. Please note that due to space constraints in the Reading Room, patrons can only request 5 boxes per day.
