OverDrive ebooks and audiobooks - a how to guide: OverDrive step by step instructions

A guide to using OverDrive to read ebooks and listen to audiobooks.

How to use OverDrive.

  • Search for OverDrive titles in SearchWorks.
  • Click on the OverDrive catalog record, or navigate directly to Stanford's OverDrive site at stanford.overdrive.com
  • Sign in to OverDrive using your SUNet and password.
     
  • If the title is available to check out, click on the red "Borrow" sign.
  • Once you click "Borrow" on the pop up menu, you get your reading options. Choose Kindle, read in browser, or download EPUB ebook to read in other readers, such as Apple's Books.

    If you are checking out an audiobook, you can download the MP3 file or listen in your browser.
  • If you choose to read in a browser, check out the Reading Settings and the Tips & Secrets options, by clicking on the three horizontal lines at the top right corner of the page.
  • Don't forget to return the book if you are done with it early. 
    To return a title, go to "My Account," click on "Loans" and then click on the "Return" button at the bottom of the book loan image.
  • You can also place holds on titles that are currently checked out by clicking on the "Place a hold" button. 
  • You can also download the OverDrive app and sign in using your SUNet and password there, to access ebooks and/or audiobooks on your mobile devices.
